It's long been my contention that getting together and collaborating can only be a force for good.
With that in mind, Paces is hosting two events on consecutive days in November, with the aim of bringing people together. The venue is the prestigious and de-stressing setting of the Yorkshire Sculture Park (YSP).
(By having the events on consecutive days, we gained a generous discount from YSP - but these are two distinct and separate events, so please do not confuse them! Whilst you would be very welcome, you wouldn't want to turn up to the wrong event, I'm sure.)
Wednesday 14th November - The Paces 2012 Autumn Conference
An "open" regional event, aimed at "influencers" of parents' decisions about their children with cerebral palsy in South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.
The catalyst for the conference was the SEND Green Paper "Support and
Aspiration" and the new funding arrangements to be introduced in April 2013. The single most challenging prospect facing all professionals,
including conductors and those working in Conductive Education settings,
is the proposed introduction of a unitary assessment and individual
plan covering Education, Health and Care for those aged 0-25 years, who
currently would receive a statement of special educational needs, which
the EHC Plan will replace. With the Draft Legislation being published this week, for inclusion
in the Children and Families Bill to be put before Parliament in 2013.Paces 2012 Autumn Conference is thus a very timely event.
The Conference has been arranged to
bring together a relevant mix of people, with a specific interest in having an
exchange of ideas and opinion. The focus is to find innovative ways, along with
best practice in assisting parents, children and young adults with cerebral palsy. The concept is to involve those who have expertise, to address the
physical, social, emotional and cognitive needs of the child.
Our wish is to bring experts
and practioners from across the region, in Health, Education and Social Care, together with parents of
children, and young adults with cerebral palsy. This group of interested
parties will then share the common purpose of working towards the setting of
future best working practice in line with the Government’s Green Paper and the
subsequent legislation, with the children at the centre of the collective
thinking.
We have two key-note speakers confirmed: in the morning Professor Rosemary Varley of University College London, until recently one of Paces' Trustees, and in the afternoon Tunde Rozsahegyi of the University of Wolverhampton. Setting us off in the morning will be Richard Parrott, Strategic Commissioning Manager for adult services with Sheffield City Council.
Full details of the event will be published shortly, including other speakers, cost and booking arrangements.
If successful, we now intend it to be the first of a series of bi-annual professional seminars. The event is thus not specifically a "conductive education" (nor even a Paces) promotional event, but hopefully the creation of a regional professional forum - a contribution we at Paces as the driver for it.
Thursday 15th November - Lunch and "a bit of chat"
A "private" lunch, by invitation, to the most senior, named individual I can identify at every conductive education setting in the UK that I can find. So far we have 14 acceptances. If I have missed your centre and you would like to attend, please accept my apologies and get in touch.
I have two purposes in mind: (i) to bring together senior managers of CE settings in the UK together ahead of the 8th CE World Congress next year, of which I am a member of the Advisory Committee, to tease out if there are common themes facing us in the UK and (ii) to sense whether there is any will at all (even from as few as 2 or 3 of us) towards more co-operative working nationally. If I have an ideal outcome for this event, it would be to find like-minded others when it comes to collaboration.
Both events will be publicised more widely in the very near future. If you wish to get in touch, my email address can be found on this blog - just to the right. Or you can call me on 0114 284 4488
